Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Many illnesses and conditions can cause inflammation of the liver, for example, drugs, alcohol, chemicals, autoimmune diseases and viral infections. There are several hepatitis viruses; they have been named types A, B, C, D, E and G. The most common hepatitis viruses are types A, B, and C.

Hepatitis A (HAV)

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus most commonly spreads when you eat or drink something contaminated by the person who doesn’t thoroughly wash his or her hands after using the toilet.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Acute hepatitis B causes symptoms to appear quickly in adults. Chronic hepatitis B develops slowly. Symptoms may not be noticeable unless complications develop. It spreads through contact with infected blood and certain other bodily fluids.

Chronic HCV can lead to more severe scarring of the liver and liver cancers.
