Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis)

Osteoarthritis

Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis) or OA is known as Sandhivaat in Ayurveda. It is also referred to by doctors as degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis. OA is a type of arthritis that is the result of the inflammation, degeneration and wearing out of the joint cartilage over time. In Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis), the top layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together. The rubbing causes pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. People of all ages can develop Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis) although people 50 years of age and above are the most likely one to acquire this disease. The joints most commonly affected are the knees, hips, and those in the hands and spine. As OA worsens over time, bones may break down and develop growths called spurs. Bits of bone or cartilage may chip off and float around in the joint. In the body, an inflammatory process occurs and cytokines (proteins) and enzymes develop that further damage the cartilage.

Causes

Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis) occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue that permits nearly frictionless joint motion. In Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis), the slick surface of the cartilage becomes rough. Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, you may be left with bone rubbing on bone. Some causes are namely :
